What you can expect:

You might have hated history in school. And even if you did learn Jewish history, it was boring. Just dates and names, no narrative, no story, and no clear connection from biblical times to the State of Israel in a clear, interesting and thought-provoking way. I am here to change that for you.

Where does Jewish history begin? What can we actually prove? And which moments in Jewish history are truly essential to understand who we are today? These are the core questions this course will explore, as we trace the story of the Jewish people across time, place, and culture.

In this course, we will study Jewish history through both biblical and non-biblical sources, examining major events in the Land of Israel and in key Jewish communities throughout the diaspora. We will look at history not only as a sequence of events, but as a developing identity shaped by exile, adaptation, faith, and continuity. We will cover:

- Biblical stories and important events to the Jewish narrative

- First and Second Temple period

- Jesus as a historical figure in Jewish historical context

- Exile and life in Babylonia

- "The Golden Age" in medieval Spain

- European Jewish communities: ghetto, crusades and blood libels, important individuals, and the development of Jewish culture.

- Hassidut and Eastern European Jewish communities

- Jewish life in the United States

- The beginning of Zionism, Aliyot to Israel, leading to the foundation of the State of Israel

And so much more!

I have always loved Jewish history. I have had great teachers along the way who have sparked my interest and just had a personal attraction to it. I want to make the incredible and fascinating moments of Jewish history accessible, clear, interesting and engaging.

This course is designed to give you a clear, big-picture understanding of Jewish history and does not require any prior knowledge or background. It is ideal and intended for anyone who wants to understand how ancient texts, historical events, and lived Jewish experience come together to shape Jewish life today.

For those who wish to go deeper, academic sources and additional resources will be provided throughout the course, but engaging with them is entirely optional. All you need to truly bring is curiosity, openness, and a desire to learn.
